Peggy Shoe habitually crossed
out curse words in books, writing a gentler word above the sinful one. At the
book club meeting on Monday Peggy bounced to her feet screaming, “Filth!” waving
her arms and speaking in tongues. She scared Pam, who jumped out of the way upsetting
the coffee table with its jumble of tea cups and funnel cake, while the others
sat frozen and openmouthed on the sectional. Dot finally had to put Peggy to
bed with a Seconal.
