June chewed gum like it was trying to get away from
her. She started at nine when her errant father gave her a pack of Black Jack.
After that no one could remember a time she wasn’t sawing her jaws four beats
to the bar. Her mother said it was chewing gum that gave her the headaches but
June wouldn’t listen. It all ended when she was sixteen and rushed to the
hospital with stomach pains and they found a grapefruit sized wad of gum in her
stomach.
