A child intent on his solitary game is unaware of
the pygmy rattler coiled and alert behind a nearby root. Tiny rattles shake
with a warning no louder than the buzz of a bee. Short steps away and forgetful
in their joie de vivre, parents,
laugh and talk with friends. The boy holds up a hand in play, a fanged head
poised to strike. Is it blessing or fortune when from under his hideaway a
large cat pounces and drags the writhing snake away to play?
